War in Iraq Touches 3rd Battalion

Brighton Firefighter Robert Lyons and his wife Marcia were so very proud of their son James.  They received the news yesterday that all parents of military personnel dread...their son, stationed in Iraq, had been killed in action Wednesday morning.

After graduation from Syracuse University, with a degree in Biochemistry, James enlisted in the U.S. Army.  He attended Officer Candidate School and as 1st Lt. James Lyons, he commanded a platoon of M1 Abrams tanks in the 4th Infantry Division.  While leading a patrol along the supply routes in southern Baghdad, James was riding in an exposed position on his tank when he was shot and killed by a sniper.

Bob Lyons has been a member of the Brighton Volunteer Fire Department for more than 30 years.  Since Wednesday, at least two firefighters have been posted at the house around the clock, performing the role of extended family: answering the telephone, accepting flowers and food at the door, coordinating interviews with the media.

Thursday, in the steady rain, Brighton  Firefighters set up two spotlights in the Lyons front yard.  One was trained on the black and yellow ribbons that had been tied around a maple tree while the another illuminated the American flag near the front door.  The flag had been lowered to half staff.

Emergency Responders Attend Seminar on Dealing with Death

January 14, 2006

It's one of the most difficult incidents that an emergency responder may have to deal with- the death of a fellow Firefighter or EMT.  The Brighton Fire Department hosted a seminar Saturday on how to prepare and respond when a co-worker is killed in the line of duty. Responders learned about the leading causes of death, how to support surviving family members and how to deal with the grief after the funeral.

Dan McGuire from CISM Perspectives, Inc. says, "We don't think about this outside our range of everyday thinking, but we have to realize this will happen eventually to our department.  And those departments without a pre-plan are not going to come back to a very much functionality to do the work they need to do."

More than a hundred Firefighters and EMT's are killed every year while responding to, and working at, emergency calls.

Fatal Accident Closes Section of Pittsford Victor Road (Rte 96)

November 20, 2005

A deadly three car crash closed Route 96 in Pittsford Monday afternoon for more than six hours.

Monroe County Sheriff's Office reported that the driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

Pittsford and Bushnell's Basin Fire Departments were dispatched to the three car crash shortly after 1:30 pm.  Deputies reported a male driver in a Toyota station wagon crossed the center line, sideswiping a moving truck going in the opposite direction.  The driver of the moving truck lost control and hit a Volvo driven by a Fairport resident.  No tickets had been issued, but authorities are trying to determine why the driver of the station wagon initially crossed the yellow line.

The driver of the station wagon and the moving truck driver were both sent to local hospitals, for what authorities described as non-life threatening injuries.
